91ÖÆƬ³§ Athletics Announces 2025 Academy of Coaches Inductees

The 91ÖÆƬ³§ Athletic Department is excited to announce the 2025 91ÖÆƬ³§ Academy of Coaches inductees. In honor of celebrating 50 Years of 91ÖÆƬ³§ women's sports, all seven of our inductees are extremely accomplished female coaches.
Lisa Carlsen, Wendy Hegarty, Jill Karowski, Karen Lockyer, Erin Murphy-Lorenz, Laurie Goolsby-Schoenfeld½ý²Ô»å Catherine "Tat" Shiely will all be inducted in the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Academy of Coaches during the halftime of the women's basketball game on February 8th, 2025. The 91ÖÆƬ³§ Academy of Coaches was established in 2019 with 10 individuals in the inaugural class. It currently consists of 30 individuals.
The purpose of the induction is to recognize 91ÖÆƬ³§ Alumni and former 91ÖÆƬ³§ coaches who have profoundly impacted others in their vocation as coaches. Individuals are recognized for sustained excellence that reflects a career aligned with the Catholic Lasallian Mission of 91ÖÆƬ³§ within educational and professional settings.
Lisa Carlsen-Women's Basketball
Carlsen began coaching at the College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska, where she was the head softball coach from 1994-1997. Carlsen then proceeded to be an assistant coach for the volleyball and softball teams at Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, from 1997-1998.
After her stint at Wayne State College, Carlsen started her basketball coaching as the assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, a position she held from 1998-2000 before being promoted to head coach in 2001, guiding them to the post-season in 2003. Following her time at Nebraska-Omaha, Carlsen spent the next three seasons, from 2004-2007, as the associate head coach for Winona State University, helping guide the Warriors to a 12-win improvement.
In 2007, 91ÖÆƬ³§ made the decision to hire Carlsen as its next head women's basketball coach.
During her time with the Flyers, she recorded a 148-89 record, making four NCAA Division II Tournaments, two Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championships and an NCAA Elite Eight in 2014-2015. During the 2014-15 season, she was also named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA), GLVC, and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region IV Coach of the Year. During that season, the Flyers recorded a 23-game winning streak and received the No. 1 ranking for five weeks.
After her successful tenure at 91ÖÆƬ³§, Carlsen was named head women's basketball coach at Northern Illinois University, a position she has held since 2015. During her time at NIU, the Huskies recorded the fourth highest grade point average in NCAA Division I after being named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 for the fourth straight season ranked in the top 10.
During her first season at the helm, NIU overcame three double-digit deficits in games to come back and win, the most since 2005-2006, while four players achieved a 10 points per game average for the first time since 1989-1990. The following season, the Huskies knocked out the reigning Mid-American Conference (MAC) Champion, Ohio University, with a comeback victory after trailing by 22 points in the second quarter.
The program also received an at-large bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament for the team's first postseason berth since 1995 after making it to the MAC Tournament Championship Game in 2016-17. Carlsen led the Huskies back to the postseason in 2022-2023 as the team qualified for the Women's Basketball Invitational.
In 20 years of coaching, Carlsen owns a 318-301 record.
Before coaching, Carlsen graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1992, where she was a four-time all-conference basketball honoree and earned all-conference and All-Region as a softball player. Carlsen was also the 1992 Champion NCAA Female Athlete of the Year.
Carlsen went on to earn her master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1994 while playing professional basketball for the Nebraska Express in the Women's Basketball Association from 1992-1995.
Carlsen has four children; Jacob, Zach, Sam and Lexi. Jacob is an assistant baseball coach at Winona State, Zach is a second lieutenant in the United States Army, Sam is a student at Winona State and Lexi is a women's basketball player at Northern Illinois University.
Wendy Hegarty '92-Track & Field, Cross Country
Hegarty began coaching at Lincoln-Way High School in 1993 where she was an assistant coach. She coached the boys and girls track and field programs in the long jump and triple jump events until 2001. She also joined the school's girls swimming program as an assistant coach from 1994-1997.
Hegarty then became the assistant coach for the Lincoln-Way East girls' cross-country team in 2001, when the school opened, until 2004 when the team captured second place at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championships. Hegarty then got promoted to head coach the following season, which is where she has been ever since.
During her time coaching cross-country, Hegarty was also an assistant coach for the boys and girls track and field program in 2002 before being promoted to head coach in 2005 for distance events. She was an assistant coach in girls' track from 2007-2013 and recorded a second-place state finish in 2011 and won the state championship in 2013.
She helped lead Lincoln-Way East to back-to-back sectional championships in 2008 and 2009.
In the 2014 season as head coach of the distance runners in the girl's track program, Lincoln-Way East won the IHSA State Championship. As a result of the success in 2014, Hegarty was named Illinois Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association (ITCCCA)
Girls Track Coach of the Year.
In over 24 years of coaching cross country, Hegarty's teams have qualified for state championships 14 times and have had individuals qualify six times.
Prior to coaching, Hegarty graduated from 91ÖÆƬ³§ in 1992 after being a four-year member of the Flyers' track and field teams. She participated in the long jump, triple jump, 100m and 200m events along with relays.
Jill Karowski '01-Softball
Karowski began coaching in 2004 as the head softball coach at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. She held the position until 2007, leading the program to its best record before being named the associate head coach at Boston College from 2007-2011. During her time at BC, she spearheaded outstanding achievements, including finishing second overall in home runs and slugging percentage in 2011.
The program also had records in doubles and runs scored. After her time in Chestnut Hill, Karowski was named the head softball coach at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts.
After one season at the helm, she was named head softball coach at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, a position she held for five seasons. During her time at QU, she recorded over 100 wins and qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament in 2016.
Karowski was named the head softball coach at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island for five seasons. She led the program to its best record since 2006 with a tournament berth and 30 wins in 2019.
After a successful career at Providence, she was named the assistant softball coach at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, a position she currently holds. Karowski also founded Softball Climate and serves as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Connecticut Charge, a club softball program based out of Cheshire, Connecticut.
Prior to coaching, Karowski graduated from 91ÖÆƬ³§ with a degree in Sports Management in 2001 and a minor in coaching. Karowski was a four-year letter winner in softball at 91ÖÆƬ³§ from 1997-2001, where she was a two-time team MVP and four-time NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American.
Her career at 91ÖÆƬ³§ was capped off by a NFCA All-Region Team selection and receiving all-tournament team honors in 2001. Karowski was also a member of the women's basketball team at 91ÖÆƬ³§ during her last two seasons at the school.
After her time at 91ÖÆƬ³§, Karowski went on to receive her master's degree from Morehead State in 2002.
Karowski's significant other is Rebecca Carlson and they have two children, Skylar and Charleigh.
Karen Lockyer-Women's Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Men's Tennis
Lockyer began her coaching career coaching the junior diving team in Hinsdale, Illinois from 1968-1972. She then went on to coach the girls swimming team from 1973-1975 and the track and field team from 1973-1974 at Lockport Township.
Lockyer was then named head women's volleyball coach and head women's basketball coach at 91ÖÆƬ³§. She coached the women's volleyball team from 1975-2006 and women's basketball team from 1975-1977.
During her tenure as the 91ÖÆƬ³§ women's head volleyball coach, Lockyer achieved a 734-426-7 career record. In 1978, the team qualified for the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) post-season and posted a third-place finish in 1979.
During 91ÖÆƬ³§'s time as part of the AIAW, Lockyer led 91ÖÆƬ³§ to a 256-77-7 record, which makes her the third-winningest coach in AIAW history. She led the program to four AIAW postseason appearances.
Lockyer also served as the senior women's administrator at 91ÖÆƬ³§ from 1975-2006 and the Assistant Director of Athletics from 1978-2003. Along with her coaching duties, Lockyer served as a faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences at 91ÖÆƬ³§ from 1975-2019.
Lockyer also recorded a 28-6 mark while also serving as the head women's basketball coach for the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Flyers.
The highlight of her tenure was taking the Flyers to the NCAA Division II National Championship and AIAW Championship in 1981.
In addition to 1981, Lockyer led the Flyers to the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 1988, 1989, 2000 and 2002; four GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) titles in 1982, 1983, 1989, and 1992; and three GLVC runner-up finishes in 1984, 1987, and 1988. She received GLVC Coach of the Year in 1988 and 2002 while earning the AVCA Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year in 1988.
During the 1984-1986 seasons, she was named the men's tennis coach at 91ÖÆƬ³§.
She also served as the chair of the sports and exercise science program from 1986-2018. Lockyer held multiple committee positions with the College of Arts and Sciences department to help shape and guide that department.
Lockyer served on the Board of Trustees for the Property Plant Committee, which involved planning and construction of the campus recreation center as well as being on the faculty senate for the college of business.
Lockyer is a 2016 91ÖÆƬ³§ Hall of Fame Inductee for her remarkable accomplishments as a coach and after retiring from teaching in 2019, she earned Professor Emerita status at 91ÖÆƬ³§.
Prior to coaching, Lockyer graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education where she was awarded Athletic Department Varsity Club "I" Honors.
Lockyer is married to Cary Lockyer, D.D.S.
Erin Murphy-Lorenz '79-Women's Volleyball
Murphy-Lorenz launched her coaching career in 1979, shortly after graduating from 91ÖÆƬ³§. She was named as the head women's volleyball coach at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana. The following year, she was named the Assistant Athletic Director in addition to her head coaching duties.
She was an assistant athletic director for two years before being named Athletic Director at St. Mary's. She held that position until 1986.
Murphy-Lorenz founded River City Volleyball Club in South Bend, Indiana and started the Ultimate Volleyball Club in the USA Volleyball (USAV) Great Lakes Region in 1998, where she directed and coached for five years. She was the director for 16 years until 2019 before retiring.
During her time at Ultimate Volleyball, she produced 68 All-Americans, 324 college players and had numerous national championships and national medal finishes. Murphy-Lorenz was a USAV Meritorious Service Award winner and served on the USA Volleyball Regional Board of Directors.
Prior to coaching, Murphy-Lorenz was a three-year member of the 91ÖÆƬ³§ women's volleyball team from 1976-1979. During her three years at 91ÖÆƬ³§, the Flyers posted a 101-34 record in the AIAW and played for Karen Lockyer, who is also getting inducted in the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Academy of Coaches.
Murphy-Lorenz is a member of the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Athletics Hall of Fame after getting inducted as a women's volleyball player in 1991. Murphy-Lorenz was awarded the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Impact Player of the 1970's and 1980's in 2016.
Murphy-Lorenz is married to Joe Lorenz, who as a former baseball player, is in the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Athletics Hall of Fame. The couple have three children Elyse, John and Lauren. Both daughters coach club volleyball and Lauren coaches at Moraine Valley Community College.
Laurie Goolsby-Schoenfeld '94-Cross Country, Track and Field
Goolsby-Schoenfeld has been coaching track and field at Reavis High School as well as teaching mathematics for 29 years. She has coached cross-country the past 27 years.
She started as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach in both sports. During her tenure, Goolsby-Schoenfeld has coached seven conference championships in cross-country and has had top-three finishes in the last six years.
She has won the South Suburban Conference (SSC) Coach of the Year award five times in cross-country and twice in track and field, as well as Reavis Female Coach of the Year four times. Prior to coaching, Goolsby-Schoenfeld was a letter-winner at 91ÖÆƬ³§ for the cross-country and track and field programs and graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics.
During her time coaching at Reavis, Goolsby-Schoenfeld coached and mentored a student athlete who qualified for the Olympic Time Trials in the 10,000-meter run.
During her freshman season in 1990, 91ÖÆƬ³§ women's cross country won the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conference) Championships as Goolsby-Schoenfeld placed 10th overall which earned her GLVC all-conference honors. During her senior campaign, she finished first at the Stevens Point Invite, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in the 1500 meter race. In that same season, she was a member of the 4x800 relay team that broke the school record.
Goolsby-Schoenfeld earned her Master's Degree in Education Curriculum in 2002 from 91ÖÆƬ³§.
Goolsby-Schoenfeld is married to Kevin Schonfeld and the couple have one daughter, Kaylee.
Catherine "Tat" Shiely, Women's Basketball, Women's Volleyball
Shiely was responsible for starting the women's volleyball, basketball and track and field programs at 91ÖÆƬ³§ in 1973, she then coached at 91ÖÆƬ³§ until the conclusion of the 1974-1975 seasons. Shiely then transitioned to Marquette University where she was named the head women's basketball and volleyball coach and was also credited with starting both programs at the university located in the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Shiely coached women's basketball at Marquette from 1975-1985, while also coaching women's volleyball from 1975-1999. She was the only woman in the nation to be the head coach of the women's basketball and women's volleyball teams simultaneously.
She became the school's first Coordinator of Women's Athletics in 1975. She also served as the school's first Senior Women's Athletic Administrator from 1985 to 1994 and the first NCAA Compliance Director from 1988-1994.
During her 24-year tenure as a head coach, she won 380 matches, the top mark in Marquette University Athletics history. Shiely also won 111 games in 11 seasons as women's basketball head coach.
Shiely received the WWIAC (Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) Special Recognition Award for her commitment to the development of women's athletics in Wisconsin and her service to the conference. She was inducted into the Marquette "M Club" Hall of Fame in 2004.
